How to Maintain Your Rooflights

Once you have had your bespoke rooflights designed and installed by Lonsdale Metal, learning about maintaining rooflights is important for keeping a bright, beautiful natural light source in your home. Rooflight or skylight maintenance can mean overall cleaning, repairs and checks, so we have put together our top tips for all factors in terms of maintenance.

Create a Visual Checklist

Creating a visual checklist for maintaining rooflights is a great way to ensure that quality is being upheld over a period of time. You should be checking your rooflights regularly, ticking off your checklist as you go. Important things to include on your list are:

  • Are there any cracks in the glass?
  • Are there any visual signs of leaks? Wind noise, water etc
  • Is there unexpected condensation?
  • Are opening mechanisms working correctly?
  • Is glass becoming cloudy?
  • Can you see through your glass clearly?

With these visual checks you should be able to see whether or not your glass needs repairs or cleaning, if you notice a crack or a leak it is important that this is noted. Condensation can also lead to mould or mildew growing in your home which can be detrimental. If your windows are steamy or if you are not able to see through the glass clearly then it may be time to give your windows a clean.

How to Clean Skylight Windows

Cleaning is an excellent way of maintaining rooflights initially as it can prevent future issues. Cleaning should be undertaken in two ways, interior and exterior. Of course, all safety precautions should be taken into account, and if you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself you should contact a professional window cleaner who will be able to do the job safely.

However, if your rooflights are easily and safely accessible you may wish to clean skylight windows yourself. Interior wise, if they are in reach, then use an extendable sponge or brush, hot water and soap. Thoroughly scrub the glass of your window as well as the outer frame, removing any staining or grime. Once you have washed the glass with soap and water you should then look to dry them effectively. Use a clean, dry towel to go over the glass and then polish using a microfibre cloth for a glistening, high quality finish. For the exterior of your windows you should follow the same method as long as you stay safe and secure, never go onto your roof if it is not safe. Once you have dried off your windows both inside and out, make sure that you have dried around the outer frame as well. Water gathering here could lead to mould or mildew growing in your home.
