The Importance Of Rafter Glazing Bars

Incorporated across multiple structures including conservatory roofs, carports and greenhouses, rafter supported bars play a pivotal role in providing essential support to glass or polycarbonate panels. They require robust strength to bear substantial weight, high levels of durability and must be resilient against adverse weather conditions such as heavy wind and water.

By carefully considering these factors, you can ensure that you will not need frequent replacements and this will contribute to the long-term reliability and safety of the overall installation.

Rafter Supported Or Self Supported?

When dealing with a timber frame that you can screw into, you should consider opting for rafter-supported glazing bars. However, when connecting multiple panes, self-supported should be utilised as they do not require a timber frame in order to install.

Plastic Or Aluminium?

You have the option to purchase glazing bars made of either plastic or aluminium, both of which boast rust-resistant properties, structural integrity, and a long-lasting lifespan.

Plastic bars are inexpensive and are well-suited for multiwall polycarbonate installations. They offer ample strength to support the structure’s weight, and their affordability is attributed to the fact that it is made out of plastic.

In contrast, if your installation involves solid polycarbonate or glass panels, it is advised to opt for sturdier aluminium glazing bars. Despite its lightweight nature, aluminium is remarkably tough and durable, ensuring it can withstand any additional weight and any unfavourable weather conditions.

Rafter Glazing Bars From Lonsdale Metal

Aluminium glazing bars for timber rafters have integral drainage channels and continuous gaskets to ensure optimum weather-tightness. Our ThermGard-R glazing bars feature a robust standard glass stop to prevent glass slippage, but we suggest advice be sought if pitch and/or span exceeds 3m as a heavy duty glass stop may be required.

Rafter Glazing Bar FAQs

  • Why is ventilation important for timber glazing bars?

Ventilation is vital in any indoor space, as a lack of it can encourage the breeding of mould and collection of condensation which can permanently damage any surface it comes into contact with. Additionally, air circulation can have your building feeling far less stuffy than it would otherwise, and give you a much-needed gust of fresh air.

  • What are Glazatherm Roof Ventilators made of?

Glazatherm roof ventilators are made of thermally broken aluminium. Thermally broken aluminium enhances the thermal performance of your roof ventilators and will allow you to heat your building far more efficiently.

  • How do Glazatherm Roof Ventilators open?

When it comes to opening your Glazatherm Roof Ventilators, you could choose a manual or electric opening mechanism, and include a remote cable if you so wish. We like to ensure flexibility with our roof ventilator options and all you need to do is enquire!

  • Are they available in different colours?

Yes. All standard RAL and BS colours, including white and anthracite grey, are available for our Glazatherm Roof Ventilators. If you’d like to find out more about the specific colours we offer, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
